The Best Day Trips from Tirana: Krujë, Durrës, Dajti and More

Tirana makes a good base for short excursions, because several of Albania's most interesting sites lie within an hour or so of the capital. If you land in Tirana with a few spare days, these trips let you see history, mountains and sea without changing hotels. Here are the best options and how to fit them together.

Krujë: the castle of Skanderbeg

Krujë is a hill town north of Tirana, closely tied to Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg, the fifteenth-century hero who led the resistance against the Ottoman Empire and who remains a national symbol. The castle at the top contains a museum dedicated to his life and to Albanian history, and the old bazaar below winds up the hill with shops selling crafts, carpets, copperware and souvenirs. It is an easy half-day trip, and the views over the plain to the sea on a clear day are excellent. Visit early or late in the day to avoid the tour groups.

Durrës: Roman amphitheatre and sea

Durrës is Albania's main port and one of its oldest cities, founded by Greek colonists more than 2,500 years ago. The Roman amphitheatre, built in the second century and among the largest in the Balkans, sits in the middle of the modern city, and the nearby Venetian tower and archaeological museum add context. The long beach is lively in summer, although it is more urban and less pristine than the southern Riviera. Combine the visit with lunch at a seafront restaurant.

Mount Dajti by cable car

The Dajti Ekspres cable car takes you from the edge of Tirana up into the Dajti National Park in about fifteen minutes. At the top there are walking trails, picnic areas, restaurants and wide views over the city and the surrounding plain. It is an easy way to escape the summer heat, because the temperature is noticeably cooler than in the city. Check opening times and weather conditions before you go, since the service may close for maintenance or in strong winds.

Cold War history: the bunkers

Albania built hundreds of thousands of concrete bunkers during the communist era. In Tirana, two of the largest have been turned into museums called Bunk'Art 1 and Bunk'Art 2, which explain life under the regime and the secret police. They take about one to two hours each and give essential context for understanding modern Albania.

Sample plans

  • History day: Krujë castle and bazaar in the morning, lunch in town, then Durrës amphitheatre in the afternoon.
  • Nature day: Dajti cable car in the morning, walk and lunch on the plateau, then return for the evening walk in the Blloku district.
  • Slow day: Bunk'Art in the morning, the National History Museum, then coffee on Skanderbeg Square.

Getting around

Buses and furgons connect Tirana with Krujë and Durrës, with regular departures from the main bus stations. A rental car or a taxi arranged for the day gives more flexibility and is useful if you want to combine two places in one trip. Organised tours are also available and are a good option if you prefer not to arrange anything yourself.

With these trips you can see a surprising amount of Albania's history and scenery from a single base, and then continue south to Berat, Gjirokastër or the Riviera.
