Sarandë to Corfu by Ferry: How the Day Trip Works

From Sarandë you can see the Greek island of Corfu across the water, and reaching it takes less than an hour. This makes a day trip across the Ionian Sea one of the most popular excursions on the Albanian Riviera. It also works as a one-way route if you are continuing through Greece. Here is how it works.
The crossing
Ferries and fast boats run between Sarandë and the port of Corfu Town, with the faster boats taking roughly 30 to 45 minutes and slower ferries taking longer. Several operators serve the route, and timetables depend strongly on the season: expect more frequent departures from late spring to early autumn and a reduced service, or none on some days, in winter. Always check the current timetable with the operator or your hotel, because schedules change from year to year.
Documents and border checks
Albania is not in the Schengen area but Greece is, so you will pass through passport control in both countries. Bring your passport or, if you are an EU citizen, your valid ID card, and keep it with you rather than in your luggage. Nationals of some countries need a visa for Greece, so check the rules before you buy a ticket. Expect to check in at the port at least 45 minutes to an hour before departure, because border formalities can take time, especially in high season.
Tickets and prices
You can buy tickets from the ticket offices at the port, from local travel agencies in Sarandë and online with some operators. In July and August, book a day or two ahead, especially for the last return boat. Prices vary by operator and season, and a return ticket is often cheaper than two single tickets. Make sure you know the time of the last boat back and arrive early, because you do not want to be stuck on the island.
Making the most of the day
- Corfu Town's old town is a UNESCO-listed maze of narrow streets, arcades and Venetian fortresses, and it is easy to see on foot in a few hours.
- Stroll along the Liston, the elegant arcaded promenade, and visit the Old Fortress.
- Eat at a taverna in the old town and try local dishes such as pastitsada or sofrito.
- If you have a car, remember that most Albanian rental agreements do not allow you to take it to Greece by ferry without permission. A day trip on foot is simpler.
Is it worth it?
If you are staying in Sarandë or Ksamil and have a spare day, the trip gives you a very different atmosphere in a short time, along with a simple comparison between two neighbouring countries. If you are short on time or prefer beaches, you can skip it without regret, because the Albanian side offers plenty to see. Travelling in winter or in bad weather means services can be cancelled, so leave some flexibility in your plan.
Check the latest timetable and passport rules before you go, and enjoy one of the easiest and most scenic border crossings in the Mediterranean.
