The Best Beaches on the Albanian Riviera, from Dhërmi to Ksamil

The Albanian Riviera runs along the Ionian Sea from the Llogara pass down to Sarandë and Ksamil. It combines clear blue water, mountain backdrops and a mix of lively beach clubs and quiet coves. Each beach has its own character, so the best choice depends on whether you want to relax, swim, party or hike. Here is a guide to the main stretches, from north to south.

Llogara and the road to the sea

The journey starts at the Llogara pass, where the road climbs through pine forest to over 1,000 metres before dropping steeply to the coast, with sweeping views of the sea and the Karaburun peninsula. There are viewpoints at the top, and it is worth stopping for photographs and a drink. The descent leads directly to Palasë and Dhërmi.

Dhërmi

Dhërmi has a long pebble beach below a mountain village, with beach clubs along most of its length and clear water. It is lively in July and August, with music and young crowds, and calmer in June and September. Just north of the village, the smaller beaches of Drymades are popular with those who prefer a quieter environment.

Gjipe

Gjipe is a pristine cove at the mouth of a canyon, reachable by a short walk along a trail from the road above, or by boat. The beach is small and has few facilities, which keeps the atmosphere wild and relaxed. Bring water, snacks and shoes with good grip, and pack out your rubbish. It is best visited on weekdays or early in the morning.

Himarë and Livadhi

Himarë is a small town with a long beach, a historic castle and many restaurants, making it a convenient base. Livadhi beach, a long strip of pebbles and clear water, is lined with sunbeds and bars. Nearby, Jale beach is popular with younger visitors and has a more active, social feel. The town and the surrounding beaches offer good value compared to Ksamil and Sarandë.

Porto Palermo

Between Himarë and Sarandë lies Porto Palermo, a sheltered bay with a small castle on a peninsula, built in the early nineteenth century. The water here is calm and clear, and the location is photogenic, with a bay surrounded by hills. It makes a good stop to stretch your legs and swim on the way south.

Sarandë and Ksamil

Sarandë is a lively resort town with a long promenade, restaurants and hotels, and is the main base for the south, while Ksamil's turquoise water and small islands make it the most photogenic beach area. Both are crowded in summer, so choose your timing carefully. From Sarandë you can also visit Butrint and the Blue Eye, a natural spring with deep blue water, and take a ferry to Corfu.

Practical tips

  • Best months: June and September, when the sea is warm and the crowds are smaller.
  • Beach clubs charge for sunbeds and umbrellas; free space is available but fills early in peak season.
  • A car makes the Riviera much easier, though the coastal road is well served by buses and shared minibuses.
  • Carry cash for small beach bars and remote spots.
  • Many beaches are pebbly, so water shoes are useful.
  • Respect the coast: take rubbish with you and avoid damaging the dunes and vegetation.

Whether you prefer lively clubs or hidden coves, the Riviera has a beach to suit you. Spend a few nights in different places rather than rushing through, and you will see how varied this coastline is.
