The Lake Koman Ferry: How to Do Albania's Most Scenic Boat Ride

Few journeys in Europe are as striking as the ferry across Lake Koman. For about three hours the boat winds through a narrow flooded gorge, with steep limestone walls rising on either side and glimpses of tiny villages that can only be reached by water. It is regularly ranked among the world's most beautiful ferry rides, and it is also a practical link to the Valbonë valley in the Albanian Alps.
What is Lake Koman?
Lake Koman is a reservoir created in the 1980s when the Drin river was dammed. The water filled a series of canyons, creating a long, thin lake with deep green and turquoise water. The route between Koman and Fierzë follows this flooded canyon system, and because there are almost no roads along the shore, the boat is the only realistic way to travel through it. The scenery changes constantly, from open stretches where mountains reflect in the water to narrow sections where the cliffs close in on both sides.
How to get to the ferry
The ferry departs from Koman, a small village about an hour by road from Shkodër. From Tirana, the full drive to Koman takes about three and a half hours. Many travellers stay a night in Shkodër the day before and take an early minibus or taxi to the dock. Departures are typically in the morning, and the boat must be reached on time because it does not wait. Parking at the dock is free if you arrive by car, but you will need to arrange return transport if you continue to Valbonë and do not plan to return the same way.
Schedule, tickets and operators
The ferry operates seasonally, roughly from mid-April to early November, with the heaviest schedule in the summer months. Several operators run boats on the route, and each has its own departure time and price, so check current details before you travel. Tickets are sold at the dock and through local agencies, and in peak summer it is wise to reserve a day or two ahead because boats can fill. Vehicles can be carried on some ferries for an extra fee, but space is limited, so reserve early if you travel by car.
- Season: approximately mid-April to early November.
- Duration: around two and a half to three hours between Koman and Fierzë.
- Booking: reserve a day ahead in July and August.
- Bring: sun protection, a windproof layer, water and snacks.
On board
Most boats have a covered lower deck and an open upper deck. The upper deck is where you will want to be, because the views are unobstructed, but it can be hot in summer and windy at any time. Locals use the ferry too, so you may share the boat with villagers returning home with groceries and parcels, which adds to the charm. Expect a few mid-route stops at lakeside hamlets where passengers step on and off. Drinks and simple snacks are sold on board, but selections are limited and prices are higher than on land, so bring your own water.
Continuing to Valbonë
At Fierzë, minibuses wait to take passengers to the Valbonë valley, roughly 45 minutes to an hour away by road. Guesthouses in Valbonë can often arrange a pick-up when you book. This is the easiest way to reach Valbonë without a rugged mountain drive, and it also places you at the start of the Valbonë to Theth hike, which many visitors walk over the following days. If you plan to continue to Theth, you can leave your onward transport for the end of the hike and arrange a transfer back to Shkodër.
Practical advice
- Check the weather. The ferry may be delayed or cancelled in rough conditions.
- Withdraw cash in Shkodër. There are no ATMs at Koman or Fierzë.
- Download offline maps. Mobile coverage is unreliable in the gorge.
- Travel light. Large suitcases are awkward on small boats and minibuses.
- Plan for a full day. Between waiting, boarding and onward transport, the journey occupies most of the day.
The ferry is more than a way to get from A to B. It is a quiet, immersive introduction to the northern mountains, and for many visitors it is the highlight of the trip. If you have the time, make it part of a loop: ferry in to Valbonë, hike across to Theth, and return to Shkodër by road.
